About Me

My photo
I am a writer, editor, reviewer and dance teacher based in Perth, Western Australia.

My books

The first two novels of my trilogy, The Talismans, are not available as e-books at present, but I expect to get them back online shortly. However, I do have paperbacks of The Dagger of Dresnia at the low price of $25 including postage within Australia. I also have a short story, 'La Belle Dame', in print - see Mythic Resonance below. The best way to contact me is via Facebook!

Buy The Talismans

The first two books of The Talismans trilogy were published by Satalyte Publications, which, sadly, has gone out of business. I hope to see my books back on Amazon under a new publisher in the near future.

Writers' Block - the dreaded malady

I'm at the dreaded two-thirds mark of my WIP and find myself stuck. There is no reason why I should be stuck—I have what looks like a workable outline and I'm reasonably happy with the first two thirds, at least for a first draft—but somehow I can't seem to motivate myself to write the last third.

I've struck this blocking point before and I've read of it happening to others, too. I've spent hours in self analysis. Am I really happy with the outline? Am I scared to finish the novel? Is the room too hot? Too cold? Do I need more vitamins? More chocolate, maybe? Or do I just need a swift kick in the pants?

I wish I knew. If you have any cures for this malady (other than an 18 month break, which is how long it took me to get back to my first novel after the same blocking point!) do please share it with me.

Hope the websites I sent you helped. I like the suggestion that says "Choose one sentence in a paragraph and write a paragraph about it. Then choose one sentence from that paragraph and do it again." (http://leo.stcloudstate.edu/acadwrite/block.html). That gets me moving every time.

That's one I'm going to do, Carol, just as soon as I get today's chores out of the way. Most of the morning has gone on critiquing for OWW. A break to do some housework should clear the cobwebs and maybe let a more creative mindstate come through:-) I'll blog the outcome!

I don't have any brainstorms, either. I'm not writing too much, just a little here and there. HOw's things in Australia. I heard that you can't get a visa there unless you're out of the country. Must be an interesting place for a while, hey, have you tried travelling. I got this blog from the OWW. Thanks, it's good to know other writers are having a hard time getting that next novel out.

Hi Nonny-mouse!:-) I've lived in Oz since I was a kid but I've also lived in England, Scotland, New Zealand and the States. I love travel and yes, it can be very inspiring. I think it's usually indirect, though - you travel, you see stuff, the unconsious absorbs and manipulates it and at some future date coughs it back up in a new form.

It's not hard to get a tourist visa for Oz from almost anywhere in the world. Permission to immigrate, though is another matter. You can google for the Oz immigration guidelines - I've read tham and they are tough. But come for a holiday if you can. It's a great place!

And best of luck with the writer's block. Like everything else, it's temporary - but sometimes "temporary" seems to go on forever. In my next post I'll pass on the stuff people have been recommending.
